A formal theory for estimating defeaturing-induced engineering analysis errors

چکیده
ABSTRACT Defeaturing is a popular CAD/ CAE simplification technique where ‘small or irrelevant features’ are suppressed within a CAD model for speeding-up downstream processes, especially finite element analysis. Unfortunately, defeaturing also results in analysis errors that are not easily quantifiable within the current theoretical framework. In this paper, we provide a rigorous theory for swiftly computing such defeaturing-induced engineering analysis errors. In particular, we focus on problems where the features being suppressed are cutouts of arbitrary shape and size within the body. The proposed theory combines two concepts, namely, adjoint formulation and monotonicity analysis, to arrive at strict bounds on engineering analysis errors when such features are suppressed. The theory is illustrated through numerical examples.

Quantitative control of idealized analysis models of thin designs
When preparing a design model for engineering analysis, model idealization is often used, where defeaturing, and/or local dimension reduction of thin regions, are carried out. This simplifies the analysis, but quantitative estimates of the idealization error, the analysis error caused by this idealization, are necessary if the results are to be of practical use. The paper focuses on a posterior...
متن کاملEstimating the effects of removing negative features on engineering analysis
This paper provides a general framework for the quantitative estimation of the effects of removing negative features on engineering analysis, or modification sensitivity for short. There are two main applications: (i) when defeaturing models so that finite element analysis may be carried out more quickly and with lower memory requirements, and (ii) when performing iterative design based on fini...

متن کاملSecond-order defeaturing error estimation for multiple boundary features
A posteriori estimation of defeaturing error. i.e. engineering analysis error caused by defeaturing, remains a key challenge in CAD/CAE integration; indeed, it is essential if analysis based on automatic simplification of the geometry of a complex design is to be reliable. Previous work has mainly focused on removing a single, negative, internal design feature (i.e. a void within the model’s in...
متن کاملA Mathematical Formulation to Estimate the Fundamental Period of High-Rise Buildings Including Flexural-Shear Behavior and Structural Interaction
The objective of the current study is to develop a simple formula to estimate the fundamental vibration period of tall buildings for using in equivalent lateral force analysis specified in building codes. The method based on Sturm-Liouville differential equation is presented here for estimating the fundamental period of natural vibration. The resulting equation, based on the continuum represent...
